“Winning Jazz in the Park Competition Gave Me the Confidence to Push Further”

An interview with daoud, last year’s winner on how the competition impacted their journey

For emerging jazz musicians, finding the right stage, the right audience, and the right support can be a game-changer. Jazz in the Park Competition has been that springboard for many artists over the years. Last year’s winner reflects on their experience, from performing in Cluj for the first time to how the award helped shape their career.

The First Step Into Romania’s Jazz Scene

“What an awesome moment and opportunity it was for us. Discovering the Cluj audiences for the first time was a highlight of our year, and we’ve sought to come back to Romania as often as possible ever since.”

Winning the competition wasn’t just about the prize, it was about opening doors. For many international artists, Jazz in the Park is their first connection with the Romanian jazz scene, and from there, new opportunities emerge.

“We’ve definitely used the competition as a springboard to develop in Romania and neighboring countries. These things take time, but it’s starting to look pretty good.”

The Impact Beyond the Stage

While the recognition and exposure are invaluable, the financial support that comes with the prize allows winners to invest in their music.

“The grant money was used to finish paying off our first record and invest in the next album, which I’m super excited to announce soon! It allowed me to take the time to make an album the way I wanted.”

This is exactly what the competition is designed for: to give artists the resources to focus on their craft without compromise.

Would You Recommend It to Others?

“Absolutely 100%.”

What makes the competition unique is not just the exposure but the experience itself—getting to perform alongside amazing musicians, discovering new audiences, and feeling the energy of a festival that genuinely supports emerging talent.

“If only for the opportunity to get inspired by all the amazing bands from Romania and Europe that grace the stage every year. The opportunity to connect with a wonderful audience and the amazing team behind the festival.”

On Stage: A Breathtaking Experience

Performing at Jazz in the Park is about more than just music – it’s about atmosphere, setting, and connection.

“We played in the afternoon slot (let’s be honest, those are always a bit more challenging), but people responded, and eventually, we got them right in front of the stage, interacting with us. The festival grounds are amazing, and the view of the city below is breathtaking.”

For artists looking for a platform that not only supports their music but also helps them grow in a meaningful way, Jazz in the Park Competition remains one of the best opportunities in Europe.
