The Story of Cymande: Getting it Back

For the first time in Romania, the documentary about the most sampled band in history, CYMANDE, arrives in Cluj-Napoca. In collaboration with BRD Groupe Société Générale, we are presenting the film at Cinema Victoria on May 17, 2024, at 7:30 PM.

🎟️ Tickets available here: https://www.cinemavictoria.ro/movie/premiera-nationala-the-story-of-cymande-getting-it-back-jazz-in-the-park-2024/

Before you experience them live at the Ethnographic Park on August 31, come and discover their story in the cinema! We’re letting you know right now that their journey has not been an easy one, but it certainly has a happy ending.

After the screening, we’ll meet in the foyer for a small gathering with music played by our dear MeloMelanj DJs.

About the Documentary 📽️

The name Cymande means Peace & Unity, the values they advocate for. Discovered in ’71, they released their first album in ’72 after gaining the trust of a producer who believed in their music. They opened for Al Green, becoming the first UK band to perform at NYC’s esteemed Apollo Theater—America’s most revered venue—reaching the TOP 20 in the US. In ’73, they released their second album and toured successfully in the USA. Upon their return to the UK in ’74, they faced racial discrimination, leading them to disband. The band members returned to their previous jobs, some working as lawyers or electricians. Meanwhile, their music continued to inspire many artists, and in 2014, due to popular demand, Cymande reformed, albeit with a reduced lineup of five members—two had passed away. Forty years later, they decided to come back, and another decade passed before they released their own documentary, “Getting It Back: The Story of Cymande”.

What other people said about the movie:

“You feel it more than you hear it.” – Khruangbin

“Everyone who loves music should watch this.”

“Their music was strong enough not to die.”

“They changed music for me, and if you hear them, they will change it for you. I guarantee.”
